What Kind of Lighting Do You Need?
Depending on your scene, budget and location there are many aspects to consider:Â Â
- Time – how much time do you have to setup, rig and de-rig your lights?Â
- Location – how big is your location, what power and what lighting is already available?Â
- Look – how do you want the scene to look?  Â
There have historically been 3 main types of lighting:
Key lighting is the main lighting for the scenes you’re shooting. This is the equivalent of natural light in an outdoor shoot or your main lighting source.Â
It needs to light your subjects clearly, and its degree of hardness or softness will depend on the type of mood and atmosphere you’re looking to create along with the type and placement of your light. Â
Fill lighting fills in the dark spaces that your key lighting can’t cover. This lighting is weaker, but still essential for creating believable scenes. In some cases, you can choose to rely on reflectors or silks instead of fill lighting. Â
Finally, back lighting helps create a separation in your scene between foreground and background lifting your subjects from their background and giving them greater definition and depth.Â
How to Choose the Perfect Lighting for Your Shoot
Consider what you want from your scene, do you need hard or soft lighting or a combination of the two. Or perhaps you just need to lift the natural light levels to gain a correct exposure. Â
How you use the lights you choose is as important as the equipment’s capabilities.Â
If your recording high frame rates and slow motion consider flicker free lighting. Pro Motion Hire stock flicker free HMI ballasts and powerful LED’s enabling high speed recording up to 1000 frames per second if required.  Â
Another consideration is budget. This is where LED lighting can make a huge difference. LED lights are highly energy-efficient and increasingly versatile for film and video.Â
Our range of LED lighting includes Kino Flo, Lightpanel and Aputure alongside a selection of tubes, Fresnel lights and panels.Â
